Mississippi’s Radiologic Technologist Schools

Interested in radiography? In Mississippi, you begin the process by enrolling in an accredited radiology technology program. Find radiologic technologist schools in Mississippi as well as related radiology technology programs. You may want to consider a program that has been accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JCERT), however this is not a requirement.

Technologists typically enter the field with an associate’s degree. Programs have varying admission policies, but there is some level of selectivity involved. The committee may look at test scores as well as grades in prerequisite courses. You may be expected to have already achieved CPR certification at the time of admission. The school will want to know you’re committed to the profession; they may require or recommend that you put in some observation hours beforehand. There may also be an interview. You will find a list of accredited in-state programs on the site of the Mississippi Society of Radiologic Technologists.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Registration In Mississippi

After you complete your program requirements, you will need to go through a credentialing process through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. You must demonstrate that you meet the ARRT’s ethics and educational requirements. You will need to have your program director verify that you have completed the mandatory radiologic procedures. Then you will take a certification exam. When the ARRT approves your candidate status, you will be assigned a three month testing window. You will schedule your own exam through Pearson VUE. (If you don’t take the exam by the end of the testing window, you will need to pay another examination fee.)

Before you can work as a radiologic technologist in Mississippi, you will also need to register with the state. You can download the application from the board site. You will fill answer some professional fitness questions. If you have ever been licensed in medical radiation technology (radiologic technology, nuclear medicine, or radiation therapy) you will need to submit copies of your registration.

You can work under a temporary registration for up to six months while fulfilling your examination and certification requirements. You will need to submit the standard application plus an educational verification form. You’ll fill out the top part of the form and then forward it to the school where you completed your educational requirements.

You must apply for the temporary permit within twelve months of graduation. Otherwise, you will need to have registration in hand when you apply for Mississippi licensing.

You can increase your employment options by pursuing additional certifications. Some Mississippi radiologic technologists choose to complete a bachelor’s; the Mississippi Society of Radiologic Technologists notes that there is an online option.

Limited Permits/Licenses

Mississippi’s Professional Licensure Division does not issue limited licenses. However, some health care assistants are eligible for permits through other departments, for example, the Board of Chiropractic Examiners or the Board of Medical Licensure. Permits allow health care workers to carry out certain basic x-ray procedures under the supervision of qualified practitioners.
